Description: Tarashikomi or Japanese marbling is a wonderful way to create abstract shapes and forms to bring a fresh feel to watercolors. Clear water is applied to rice paper and then hand ground black ink is dropped into the water. The water and ink blend and flow to create abstract shapes in black and varying shades of gray. Once dry, color washes and other brush strokes can be added to complete the painting. Warning, this technique can be ADDICTIVE! No prior art knowledge or skill is necessary; the painting paints itself! Artists will love the freedom and creativity of this technique. Bring small plastic containers for water and paper towels. Bring sumi-e supplies and a tube of watercolors if you have them. Bring small stones or other heavy items to gently stretch paper as you work.
